Oakfield Middle School

Middle school is the period in a student's life that takes place after elementary school and before high school. Typically, the middle school grades are 6th, 7th and 8th grade, although some school districts include 9th grade in their middle school programs.  Middle school is to prepare students for high school level academics, which is much more rigorous then elementary level studying.

Middle School Experience
Middle school offers students so much more than elementary school and the best way to experience the middle school years is to join a club, a sports team or some other school activity. Your child probably has an idea of what he'd like to do, but if he doesn't, give them some background information on what it's like to play in the school band, or join an intramural sports team.  Your child will make new friends and may learn a new skill or develop a new interest that he'll want to continue through high school.

Middle school is an opportunity for growth, and you should encourage your child to be independent and to develop interests of his own. It's perfectly fine if your child decides to embrace a new sport or develop an interest that you don't share. For instance, your child may decide to quit soccer in order to concentrate on band or student government. Show your child that you want him to be his own person, and that sometimes that means being different from you. Independence may also mean finding new friends, or enlarging a circle of friends. Remind your tween that it's alright to want to expand his or her social circle.

Middle School Homework

Many students experience an increase in homework and other responsibilities during middle school. It's important to help your child stay organized, so that he can easily keep up with assignments and other commitments. Consider purchasing an agenda or keeping track of everything your child has to do on a large white board at home. All information on projects, extra-curricular activities, homework and field trips should be jotted down and tracked. In addition, help your child develop a regular routine, so that he knows when to sit down to finish homework, and when to play or watch television.

Middle School Tutors

Starting all over at a new school is hard enough, but starting over when you're struggling with math or reading can make the experience a nightmare. Consider tutoring services if your child's academic skills aren't where they should be. Also, ask the middle school about any resources they may provide to help your child succeed academically.

Success in the classroom is dependent on several factors, including your child's personality and temperament. You can help your middle school student achieve in the classroom by providing support, being positive, and if necessary, hiring a tutor if your child falls behind. Most of all, your tween needs to know that starting middle school gives him a clean slate, and that means anything can happen, if he applies himself.

Middle School Friends

Friendships can be tricky in the middle school years. Peer pressure and social cliques can tear friendships apart, but it's important for tweens to make and keep friends who are supportive, helpful and positive. It's also important to help preteens learn how to manage friendships problems when they pop up.  Availability is one characteristic tweens look for when choosing friends. True friends are people they can see frequently, who are ready to do activities together and who are not always busy with other friends and commitments.  Tweens also look for friends who have similar personal characteristics to themselves, such as attitudes, beliefs and goals. Being the same age also becomes more important than it was earlier in development.  Finally, tweens report that they want friends who have positive characteristics, including generosity, loyalty and commitment. In other words, they only consider people they respect to be true friends and they steer away from the mean girls and guys.
